Longfellow, Byron, Goethe they all came to Nemi. Why not you?
Join us in the bucolic setting of Marias vineyard and vegetable gardens on the edge of picturesque Nemi lake, surrounded by the sacred forest of ancient history.
Here, a few hundred meters from the ancient temple of Diana, to whom the Emperor Caligula had two extraordinary ships dedicated and constructed for his use on the lake, youll enjoy a day of relaxed fun and laughter in a beautiful setting as you learn to prepare and cook dishes which have their origins in those long ago times.
After a walk through the vineyard, with its panoramic views of the lake, and the harvesting of necessary vegetables from the extensive garden, therell be plenty of Carlos wines on hand, along with a range of local antipasti, as we prepare recipes based on the vegetables, grains and meats produced from the rich, volcanic soil.
Apart from a full array of summer vegetables, Maria also produces her own extra virgin olive oil, pesto, vegetables preserved in olive oil and preserves of fruits such as figs, peaches, kiwi, prickly pear and citrus.
For more than 20 years Maria impressed Romans fleeing the city to the fresh, verdant hills of the Castelli Romani for lunch of a weekend, in her family run trattoria. More recently, her husband Carlo has concentrated his energies rebuilding and diversifying the vineyard and producing robust wines. And Maria enchants visitors with entertaining classes and delicious meals of authentic Roman cuisine in a spectacular natural setting in the very heart of the Roman world.
During your stay with Maria, youll learn to make an array of authentic dishes. Youll make home made pasta from scratch and learn to prepare delicious vegetable and meat dishes. Depending on the season you could learn to make stuffed zucchini fritters from the zucchini flowers picked from her garden or Marias delicious pollo con pepperoni-chicken with sweet peppers. .
After our cooking class with Maria, well all sit together at the long wooden tables under trellised vines to enjoy the richness and subtlety of the flavors combined in the array of dishes weve created.
Plenty of Carlos wine is included to compliment your meal along with Marias home made liqueurs and her famous dolci- dessert.
After lunch we will take a walk with Maria and visit the museum in Nemi.
